Barça knocked out of Copa del Rey

January 14th, 2010

Well it had to happen eventually – despite beating Sevilla 1-0 away last night, FC Barcelona departed the Copa del Rey on aggregate after their 2-1 defeat at the Nou Camp. While the first half lacked any real opportunities, Barcelona dominated the second half.

However, it was only in the 63rd minute that Xavi scored after receiving the ball from Iniesta. Barça kept on going until the final whistle despite time wasting by Sevilla in injury time to ensure the visiting team didn’t get the opportunity they needed to go through to the next round.

Barcelona face Sevilla once more on Saturday, when the Andalusians visit the Nou Camp in the Spanish League. Check out forthcoming fixtures and availability of Barcelona tickets on the homepage.

Barcelona disappoints in Copa del Rey

January 6th, 2010

Gabriel Milito returned to active duty against Sevilla last night after an 18 month layoff due to a knee injury, but a disappointing performance in poor weather conditions meant that Barça need to pull out all the steps in the return leg of the Copa del Rey next week.

The Barça squad included some unfamiliar faces in the form of Thiago’s debut along with Pinto and Chygrynskiy, but first team regulars such as Messi, Alves and Iniesta couldn’t overcome Sevilla’s well organised play. Commenting after the match, Pep Guadiola took responsibility for the result.

Copa del Rey: Barça through, Real Madrid knocked out

November 11th, 2009

Last night’s 5-0 defeat of Cultural Leonesa was in stark contrast with Real Madrid, who were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by lowly Alcorcon; despite beating Alcorcon 1-0 at the Bernabeu, Madrid lost 4-1 on aggregate and were jeered by their own fans.

Barça on the other hand went through with flying colours in the cold that has descended on Barcelona. In retrospect the first half seems like it was merely a warm up, with all five of Barcelona’s goals being scored in the second 45 minutes.

1-0 Bojan (min 50)
2-0 Bojan (min 54)
3-0 Pedro(min 62)
4-0 Messi (min 64)
5-0 Xavi (min 74)

Pedro scores 2 for Barça

October 29th, 2009

Pedro was the star of the squad last night as FC Barcelona beat Cultural Leonesa in an away match for the Copa del Rey.

Pep Guardiola was fielding a squad with 6 regulars resting and Pinto in place of Valdes – with a close to full strength team, things went very wrong for Real Madrid on Tuesday night when they were thrashed 4-0 by lightweight Alcorcon, so this could have been a risky strategy and the Copa del Rey often springs surprises.

The return match will be on November 10-12 (to be confirmed) and the winner will play either Real Madrid or Alcorcon. Tickets for Barcelona v Cultural Leonesa are now available.

One down – two to go

May 14th, 2009

Last night saw FC Barcelona pitched against Athletic Club de Bilbao in the Copa del Rey – the King’s Cup – played in Valencia between the two teams that have won the trophy more times than anyone else.

Played in front of King Juan Carlos, this match was always going to be interesting as the teams represent “the other Spain” in the form of Catalonia and The Basque Country, nations that have their own culture, traditions and languages of which they are fiercely proud – when the Spanish National anthem was played before the match, it was to the accompaniment of whistling and booing.

Barça were the clear favourites, with Athletic having little real hope of taking the trophy. However, the match was extremely good natured from both players and spectators, with everyone there to enjoy themselves.

This victory was the 25th Copa del Rey title for Barcelona, and after the match the squad replaced their shirts with one that stated “Rei de Copes” and “25″ on the back – “King of Cups” in Catalan.

March 5th, 2009

FC Barcelona’s away draw against Mallorca on Wednesday night was all they needed to take them through to the final of the Copa del Rey on May 13th. After a 2-1 victory in the first leg, played at the Nou Camp, gave an aggregate score of 3-1 to Barça.

Barcelona through to Copa del Rey semi-finals

January 30th, 2009

Barcelona’s 3-2 defeat of Espanyol at the Nou Camp last night means the blaugranas are once again through to the last four. Although two goals from Bojan and one from Piquet in minute 56 mean that Barça looked to have the game wrapped up early in the second half, Espanyol – who are in danger of relegation – fought back in front of a packed stadium and valiently clawed back 2 goals of their own.

Barcelona face Mallorca in the semi-final, with the home leg on February 4th and the return on March 4th. Keep an eye on the website for details of ticket availability.

Goalless draw against Espanyol

January 22nd, 2009

Barcelona paid a visit to Espanyol’s stadium at Montjuic last night in their Copa del Rey draw. However, despite Espanyol’s poor form this year they put on enough of an effort to thwart Barça. The return let will be played at the Nou Camp on 28th January.

Copa del Rey Quarter Final to be Barcelona Derby

January 15th, 2009

Despite going down one goal, FC Barcelona came back strongly to beat Atletico de Madrid 2-1 at the Nou Camp and to qualify for the Copa del Rey quarter final, where they meet cross town rival Espanyol.

The first leg of the quarter final will take place at Espanyol’s Estadi Olimpic on Montjuic on Wednesday 21st January, followed by the home leg on the 28th. Other teams left in the Copa del Rey are Sporting Gijon, Valencia, Sevilla, Betis and Mallorca.
