FC Barcelona News
Real Sociedad-FC Barcelona
May 6th, 2007Barcelona ensured it remains top of the league for this weekend with a 2-0 away victory against Real Sociedad. The team performed well right from the starting whistle, although Real Sociedad’s solid defence ensured that Barça was unable to do anything with their dominent possesion of the ball and it was not until 2 minutes into the second half thatIniesta was able to score from a pass from Ronaldinho.
The match settled down after this and although Messi made a good attack on the goal shortly after, it was not until the 87th minute that Samuel Eto’o was able to settle the match with another pass from Ronaldinho.
With the 3 points in the bag FC Barcelona has ensured that the remain at the top of the table, but the big match this weekend is Real Madrid v Sevilla tonight at 22:00. Barcelona will be hoping for a draw as both teams are breathing down their necks, but whatever the result this last stretch of the season promises to be nerve-wracking to the end.

Weekend roundup
March 19th, 2007With a 4-0 victory away against Recreativo on Saturday, Barcelona have maintained their position at the top of the league on 53 points, although by the end of the weekend Sevilla were again equal on points. Real Madrid on the other hand had a less than convincing victory against Nastic de Tarragona and trail in third place with 48 points with Valencia and Zaragoza just behind them.
The match against Recreativo was one of the most exciting for some time, with 2 goals from Samual Eto’o and one each from Zambrotta and Messi, who since returning from injury continues to show how valuable he is to the team.
There is a one week break in the league to allow for international duties, so the next league matches will be played on the weekend of 31st March/1st April when Deportivo arrives at the Nou Camp.
Messi snatches victory from Real Madrid
March 12th, 2007Real Madrid’s appearance in the Nou Camp proved to be one of the most exciting matches of the season to date, with Leo Messi scoring a all three of Barcelona´s goals including an equalizer at the 90th minute.
Madrid´s Ruud van Nistelrooy scored in the 5th minute, with Messi equalizing six minutes later. However the cules´ celebration was shortlived when Madrid was awarded a penalty two minutes later, again put into the back of the net by van Nistelrooy. Again Barça kept the pressure on which apid off in the 28th minute when Messi again equalized off a blocked shot from Ronaldinho.
However, things started to look as if they’d go Madrid’s way at the end of the first half when Oleguer received his second yellow card in one of a series of uneven refereeing decisions.
When Ramos scored for Madrid in the 73rd minute it seemed like all was lost. However, Barça continued the attack which paid off in the last minute to give a barely believable 3-3 draw.
With Sevilla losing to Nastic Barcelona are back on top of the league with 50 points.
Match preview: The Classic
March 9th, 2007It’s the big one on Saturday night when Real Madrid take on FC Barcelona in the Nou Camp in what is known as ‘The Classic’.
Both teams must at least draw some comfort from the fact that neither made it through to the next round of Champions League and will be pulling out all the stops to ensure victory.
One of the big doubts for Saturday night is Ronaldinho, although the club has confirmed that he is not suffering from a torn muscle in his left thigh after the match against Liverpool on Tuesday.
As to be expected the match is sold out, although there will be a small number of tickets available from the box office due to the way Barcelona allocates tickets. Expectation runs high and Spain will be at a virtual standstill on Saturday night from 22:00 when the clash of the Titans begins.
Sevilla-Barcelona
March 4th, 2007Barcelona were knocked from their position at the top of the league last night in a match that saw Seville’s Aitor Ocio sent off in the first half and both Giuly and Zambrotta handed the red card in the second.
Fighting hard, Sevilla beat a lacklustre Barça 2-1 putting themselves one point clear in the league.
Barcelona back on form
February 26th, 2007Frank Rijkaard put his team’s defeat by Liverpool well behind him on Sunday night, when a reinvigorated Barça pulled out all the stops to beat Athletic de Bilbao 3-0 and push firmly ahead of Sevilla at the top of the table.
The first goal was an own goal in the 23rd minute by Athletic defender Fernando Amorebieta, followed by Xavi in minute 30 and Samuel Eto’o in the 41st, who is clearly back on form. After scoring he called for the attention of the club doctor, whose face grew suddenly pale. But his expression quickly turned to relief when it turned out that the Camaroon star wanted to thank him for the work on his knee injury.
We have two matches lined up in the next week, both of them away. First is Zaragoza-FCB in the King’s cup on Wednesday at 21:30. The second sees Barcelona visit Sevilla, currently in second place in the league. The match is at 22:00 on Saturday.
Valencia - Barcelona
February 19th, 2007Barcelona had a disasterous match at Valencia on Sunday in a rainsoaked confrontation that saw the Catalan giants go 2-1 down. The game was strongly fought by both sides with the ref showing yellow cards galore and both teams reduced to 10 players. After a goaless first half, Valencia scored twice at the beginning of the second half and until Ronaldinho scored at the last minute it looked as if Barça wouldn’t put the ball into the back of the net at all.
Valencia’s victory pushes them past Real Madrid into third place in the league, who collected just one point against Betis on Saturday, while Sevilla are in second place with FC Barcelona ahead on goals.
Messi returns
February 12th, 2007Ronaldinho showed last night that despite his lacklustre performances of late, his talent hasn’t deserted him. The Brazilian star scored both goals in the match against Racing de Santander, boosting Barça’s league position. Eto’o was left out of the selection, as, according to Frank Rijkaard, he didn’t want to play.
Racing almost went 1-0 up after 25 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, but Victor Valdes showed why he is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Spain.
Lionel Messi was greeted with a massive cheer from the moment he began to warm up and his appearance on the pitch, although unspectacular, was warmly received by all.
Next week FCB play Valencia.
Weekend roundup
February 5th, 2007Barcelona played another uninspired match on Sunday night against Osasuna in a goal-less draw. However, Samuel Eto’o made his expected return in the 84th minute, his first match since September, while Ronaldinho was left behind in Barcelona to rest.
FCB remain at the top of the league with 43 points; Sevilla also drew and so are still just one point behind Barça, while Real Madrid slipped into 4th place behind Valencia.
