Closing the gap with a 4-1 win
March 24th, 2008With a confident victory against Valladolid and Real Madrid losing against Valencia at home, Barcelona closed the gap in the league to just 4 points.
While the first half was rather unconvincing, ending 1-1 after Barça conceded a penalty, the pace was stepped up in the last 45 minutes with Iniesta scoring one and Bojan two more goals.
Barcelona out of Copa del Rey
March 21st, 2008Barcelona are nursing their injured pride today after being soundly thrashed in the Copa del Rey. Valencia beat Barça 3-2 in the return match to go through 4-3 on aggregate.
Wasted opportunity
March 17th, 2008Real Madrid slipped on Saturday, creating a window of opportunity for Barcelona to close the gap. However, with 9 players injured, Almeria managed to slip 2 goals into the back of the net, matching Barça’s own goal scoring.
The result is sorely disappointing to players and fans alike and questions are being asked about the future of Frank Rijkaard. Madrid remain at the top of the table with 62 points, with Barcelona on 55 and Villarreal on 53.
Barcelona loses to Villarreal
March 10th, 2008Barça dropped 3 points last night in a disastrous match against Villarreal, where there created many opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. With Real Madrid winning at home, the point difference has again widened; while it was looking as though Barça may be in with a chance a week or so ago, that hope is once again slipping away.
Barça through to quarter finals
March 5th, 2008Beacelona beat Celtic 1-0 last night to secure their place in the Champions League quarter final, with an early goal from Xavi deciding the game. Bad news for Barça came with an injury to Lionel Messi, who will be out of action for 6 weeks.
The gap widens
March 3rd, 2008Barcelona visited Atletico de Madrid on Saturday night, in a match that saw 6 goals. Unfortunately 4 of those went to Atletico and with Real Madrid taking their full 3 points the gap between first and second place has widen again to 5 points. Barcelona were in control of the game during most of the first half, but without putting their advantage to solid use, wasted.
Next match is against Celtic on Tuesday.
1-1 draw against Valencia
February 28th, 2008Barcelona’s persistance paid off in the final minute of the second half when they equalized against Valencia in the first leg the Copa del Rey semi-final.
Having failed to capitalize on some early opportunities, Barcelona were determined not to let the visitors win. Clearly the better team, Valencia seemed to possess an impenetrable defense. However, a blast from Xavi with a few seconds remaining on the clock saw that Valencia’s advantage was minimized.
The return match takes place on March 20th.
The gap closes
February 25th, 2008Barcelona beat Levante a resounding 5-1 last night at the Nou Camp in a match that saw Sanmueal Eto’o score his first hat-trick for the blaugranas. Barcelona went ahead with a goal from Xavi in the 14th minute after a great bit of play by Iniesta and Eto’o. However, Barça failed to dominate and in the 41th munte and handball from Zambrotta gave Levante the chance to score off a penalty. However, Messi out things right just before half time with a pass from Xavi.
In the second half Barça showed their form and stamina, outplaying the visiting team completely. Again and again (and again) Eto’o ended up with the ball in front of the net and put it home. With Real Madrid losing against Getafe later on Sunday, Barcelona have closed the gap to just 2 points, and with an increased confidence they look as if they are capable of achieving what just a few weeks ago was unthinkable.
Celtic overpowered
February 21st, 2008Despite the fact that Barcelona dominated in Glasgow last night it was a little discouraging that in two attempts on the goal, Celtic managed to score twice. Although Messi scored minutes after Celtic’s first goa, the home team managed to finish the first half 2-1 in the lead.
However, Barcelona’s relentless assault on the goal meant that something had to give. Henry equalized at the beginning of the second half after which the Catalans continued to outclass Celtic. However, it was left to Messi to score the decisive goal and with Barcelona winning 3-2 it will be un uphill struggle for Celtic in the return match as they will need to beat Barça by 2 clear goals.
Lucky break puts Barça just 5 points behind
February 18th, 2008This weekend has proved to be lucky for Barcelona, with Real Madrid dropping 3 points against Betis and Barcelona scraping a 2-1 victory at Zaragoza. The difference is now down to just 5 points, but Barça needs to improve their form to nail the trophy.
Henry put the goal in the back of the net in the 34th minute, with Barcelona dominating the first half, although Zaragoza had some breaks through to goal. However, when the home team was awarded a penalty for Marquez’s foul on Oliveira it looked like they would quickly equalize; a shot over the bar put an end to that though.
The second half saw Zaragoza mount a sustained attack on goal, with Barcelona apparently drained, which eventually saw the hosts take a goal in the 53rd minute. It looked dangerous for Barcelona, with both sides looking like they might score, but took a penalty awarded for handball to do the trick; Ronaldinho blasted the ball into the right hand side of the net, with keeper Cesar diving the other way.
The victory owed more to luck than form, but with Real Madrid dropping a game they surely thought was in thye bag it was all round lucky weekend for Barcelona.
