Barcelona’s Lineup Changes – Summer 2007

October 15th, 2007
We have FC Barcelona tickets for all competitions at the Nou Camp

The summer saw some interesting activity for Barcelona. Thierry Henry finally settled seasons of speculation and made the move from Arsenal. This gives Barca a wealth of opportunities up front but Henry’s versatility and ability to play as a lone striker or on the wings in a striking formation will certainly seem to work to Barça’s advantage.

In the same week the club also signed midfielder Yaya Toure from Monaco and defender Eric Abidal from Lyon. It’s generally thought that Abidal was signed as a direct replacement for Giovanni Van Bronckhorst. Finally, the club also signed Gabi Milito from Real Zaragoza which fills the hole left by the departure of Motta for Atletico Madrid.

Gio Van Bronckhorst made the move back to Feyenoord over the summer. Although he had recently signed a contract until 2008 with Barca, he had a verbal commitment from the club that they would allow him to move back to Feyenoord, the club he supported as a child and where he first played football, if they came in for him.

Maxi Lopez, after a season’s loan at Mallorca, made a permanent move to FC Moscow. The striker didn’t look likely to get a first team chance at Barça, especially after the arrival of Thierry Henry. The same could be said for Saviola who left for Real Madrid on a free transfer after his contract was not renewed in June and Giuly who, with a year left on his contract, made the move to Roma. Both players found it hard to break into the team last season and with the arrival of new players and the emergence of home-grown forward talent, they seemed unlikely to be able to make much of an impact this season either.

In defence, Belletti finally made his much speculated about move to Chelsea. The 31 year old found it hard to compete for a first team place with Zambrotta in such fine form so was allowed to go. Finally, Motta fell out with coach Frank Rijkaard in the summer and was put on the transfer list. The player found it hard to consolidate his place in midfield at Barcelona – a position which wasn’t likely to change given the current talent, new signings and the emergence of youth players – so eventually agreed a one-year deal with Atletico Madrid.

The summer also saw the emergence of two Barça Youth players who may well make their mark on the first team this season. Bojan Krkic has progressed through the youth set up in phenomenal time and, although only 17, is hailed as one of the most exciting striking prospects in the game. Giovani Dos Santos, also a forward player, is also considered a ‘Wonder Kid’ and has been hailed as the new Ronaldinho.

Barcelona notches up another win

October 8th, 2007

Barcelona convincingly beat Atletico de Madrid last night to claim the 3 points that put them in 2nd position in the league.

The first goal was in the 15th minute, when a mistake from the Atletico defence meant that Deco was able to score off a pass from Messi. Just a few minutes later the score went up to 2-0 when Messi charged forward with a pass from Henry and after a giving the ball briefly to Ronaldinho, the Argentinian put it in the net.

With 2 goals behind them Barcelona’s pace slowed a little and Atletico put Barcelona’s defence to the test. Goalkeeper Victor Valdes first test was 20 minutes into the second half, but the ball was wide and the score remained 2-0.

IT was Xavi who was able to mark the final goal of the match in the last few minutes, which was set up by Deco, Messi and dos Santos. Next match is Sunday 21 October – Villarreal v Barcelona.

Final score: 3-0

Goals from Puyol and Messi against Stuttgart

October 2nd, 2007

Both Carles Puyol and Leo Messi and scored against Stuttgart in the second half, handing the victory to Barcelona.

The match also saw the return of Ronaldinho after his layoff through injury and although Puyol has only just returned to playing after a lengthy recuperation period he was substituted after seeming to hurt his leg, although the quick application of ice seems to have done the trick as he was seen sharing a joke of Ronaldinho on the bench afterwards.

Next match in Champons League is Glasgow Rangers v FC Barcelona on 23 October.

Hat-trick for Henry

October 1st, 2007

Barcelona seems to have found its form this season with another 4-1 victory, this time against Levante, and their first away win of the season. Thierry Henry led the charge with 3 goals under his belt, while Messi made it 4; Emilio Viqueira scored for the home team in the 73rd minute.

Barcelona has a busy week ahead, with a visit to Stuttgart in Champions League and then Atletico de Madrid visiting the Nou Camp on Saturday. With Puyol back in the squad and Ronaldinho expected to return, the team can only get better.

Messi shows Zaragoza who’s boss

September 27th, 2007

Barcelona beat Zaragoza on Wednesday night in the 5th round of the current Spanish League. With Ronaldinho, Eto’o and Puyol still missing due to injury, it remained for Leo Messi to provide the thrills, scoring 2 goals for Barça in the first half, with Iniesta and Marquez providing the others against Zaragoza’s 1.

With all this action in the first 45 minutes, the second half was a bit of a let down and although Barcelona tried to make it a nice neat 5 through the efforts of Henry and dos Santos among others, the ball didn’t want to kiss the back of the net.

Final score: Barcelona 4, Zaragoza 1

Victory against Sevilla

September 24th, 2007

Barcelona’s first real test of the league came on Saturday night when Sevilla made it’s annual visit to the Nou Camp. The stadium today celebrates its 50th anniversary of inauguration, which were celebrated on Saturday night by the presentation by Norman Foster of his plans for the remodelling of the stadium.

While both expansion and shelter from the elements is definitely required, Foster’s plans to change the outward appearance of one of Barcelona’s iconic landmarks is not necessary and akin to remodelling the Sagrada Familia to straighten up all of those curves, something which we do not support at all.

The man of the match, as usual, was Lionel Messi who scored Barcelona’s 2 goals and it was late in the match when Sevilla scored. Ronaldinho was not played on Saturday due to a slight injury and the team didn’t quite click, so although this was an important victory it is important to remember that the team has a lot of work to get back to top form.

Victory in Champions League match!

September 20th, 2007

Although FC Barcelona’s performance was a long way from the dazzling performance of the team when they’re playing at their best, last night at least saw a clear win in Barcelona’s 3-0 defeat against Olympique Lyonnais.

The first goal was deflected of Lyon’s François Clerc off a shot from Messi, but Barcelona failed to ignite and Ronaldinho was jeered as he was substituted by Iniesta during the second half. After the substitution the pace picked up a bit, but it wasn’t until 9 minutes before full time that Messi scored for himself and the icing on the cake was a goal from Henry off a rebound from Vercoutre.

Goalless draw against Osasuna

September 17th, 2007

More uninspired play by FC Barcelona last night saw them draw against Pamplona’s Osasuna. The slow start to the season sees them in 5th place in the league, with Real Madrid at the top. This week sees Barcelona play Olympique Lyonnais in Champions League followed by Sevilla next weekend and Zaragoza midweek next week and so it seems the right moment for them step up a gear and provide exciting football and some goals.

Decisive victory against Athletic de Bilbao

September 3rd, 2007

Sunday night saw Barcelona’s first league match of the season the the Nou Camp with Athletic Club de Bilbao visiting. As predicted Barcelona won decisively (3-1), although the match was not without controversy; the penalty awarded to Barcelona that allowed Ronaldinho to score was a bad refereeing decision and Barcelona’s final goal didn’t look to cross the line, rebounding off the crossbar and bouncing right on the goal line and out.

Inter Milan pulled apart by FCB

August 30th, 2007

An embarressed Inter Milan were thrashed by Barcelona last night in front of a capacity crowd at the Nou Camp.

The team hosting the annual Gamper Trophy took no prisoners in the 5-0 defeat, with goals from Ronaldinho, Dos Santos, Yaya, Iniesta and Motta.
