Nou Camp stadium

Wherever you sit in the stadium, your first view inside Camp Nou stadium is likely to take your breath away. With fully seated capacity for 98,700 people, it is the largest all-seater stadium in Europe and number three in the world.

Although the Nou Camp can be earily quiet when less full, it is deafening at full capacity, which is always the case when FC Barcelona play arch-rivals Real Madrid.

Other major rivals are Barcelona's second team, Espanyol, and Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Mallorca and Zaragoza.


History of the Nou Camp
Although the land had been purchased several years before expressly for a new stadium, construction of the Nou Camp started in 1954 when a decision was finally made on where to build it.

When the unfinished Nou Camp was inaugerated in 1957 it was packed with more than 90,000 people. It was the September 24th, the day on which Barcelona celebrates its patron saint, La Merce and after the opening ceremony that included a blessing from the Archbishop of Barcelona, FC Barcelona beat the visiting Warsaw selection 4-2.

More than 90,000 people attended the opening ceremony from the still incomplete terraces. Also at the ceremony were politicians and dignitaries from the sporting world.

Enlarged to its present capacity for for the 1982 World Cup, the Nou Camp can empty in 5 minutes, despite the large number of spectators.
